About The Match

Only twice in the history of the Big Bash League, a team has won a game full game by ten wickets. One such incident was way back in 2015 when Perth Scorchers defeated Melbourne Renegades and the other occasion was today at Adelaide where Hobart Hurricanes thrived against the Adelaide Strikers’ bowlers. With the win, the Hurricanes move six points clear of the next best team in the competition and whereas the Strikers are still stuck in the mid-table crowd and will be desperate to move out of it. They’ll have an opportunity to do so as soon as on Wednesday at Moe where they take on Melbourne Stars. The Stars are in a similar situation as Adelaide Strikers and are behind them just on the basis of net run rate. The winner will move to ten points, within the top-four sides, and that is what both the sides will be looking to do in the upcoming match.

Match Preview

Melbourne Stars

With the return of their international stars, Melbourne Stars returned to the winning ways as they toppled Melbourne Renegades in the local derby match. Coming into that game, the Stars were at the bottom of the table and were desperate for a victory. They not only snapped their three-game losing streak but also got back into the contention for the semifinals.

Rarely do we see a team put up a flawless bowling performance on a flat surface and that day in Melbourne was once such day. After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, all their bowler bowlers with remarkable discipline which was assisted well by extraordinary fielding. Marcus Stoinis was the pick of their bowlers and returned with 3 for 19 in his four overs. Jackson Bird, Liam Plunkett, and Adam Zambia contributed with a couple of wickets each.

Their performance with the bat was just as indisciplined as flawless their performance was the ball. Barring Marcus Stoinis, who earlier performed with the ball, none of their batsmen were able to stick around as they lost three wickets for 35. Fine little cameos by Nic Madinson and Dwayne Bravo assisted Marcus Stoinis as the Stars overhauled the total with just four deliveries to spare.

Adelaide Strikers

Batting first against the Hurricanes in their last game, Adelaide Strikers got off to a sedate start and even the total of 150 looked remote with three wickets down for 50 in the tenth over. Colin Ingram was brilliant with the bat and as a captain in Vitality T20 Blast and he had an opportunity to prove his mettle yet again.

Jon Wells and Colin Ingram not only stopped falling wickets but also resumed the fluent flow of runs. The duo took Strikers past the 150-run mark which certainly was a competitive total. At least it looked to be. Colin Ingram remained unbeaten till the very end and finished with 67 runs off just 36 deliveries. His accomplice, Jon Wells, was a little slow, but he played his part well and scored 28 off 26.

Bowling-wise, the Strikers just had a bad day where Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short batted beautifully. It was one such rare occasion wherein Rashid Khan not only failed to pick up a wicket but also conceded at nine an over in his four overs. Liam O’Connor was their only bowler who returned with a decent economy rate, but he bowled only a couple of overs.

Expert Prediction

Melbourne Stars rose from the bottom of the table and are currently at the sixth spot in the points table. The situation with Adelaide Strikers is similar is good- they’re placed at fifth, one above Stars, only because of slightly better run-rate. The Strikers have looked a little off in their recent matches with the misfiring batting unit. Melbourne Stars, on the other hand, appear to be an altogether different team with the return of their international players. They have the momentum, courtesy of their previous win, and look all set to get their fifth win of the season.
